Lucy has always been a good girl. The most hardcore thing she's done in her life was falling for a divorced man ten years her senior.

But he was the love of her life and she married him. When her Peter Pan of a husband decided to divorce her, she thought it was her chance to start anew. That was until she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Besides looking like Britney circa 2007, she is taking it well, real well. You might see her walk around the hospital during chemo sessions with bright colored wigs and outrageous t-shirts that seem to shock the most conservative employees. One of them reads F U CANCER.

I should have suspected something. Instead, when the doorbell rang, I opened the door without the slightest idea of what was waiting for me.

Beverly showed up on my doorstep along with the man I had tried to keep away all week.

“Shit,” I said. “What now?”

Brandon smiled, but looked sheepish, which made me worry. He was holding a bouquet of roses, and handed it to me without saying a word. I took it and thanked him, and when I locked eyes with his, I felt a million different feelings unleash inside of me.

He was giving me that hooded, cautious look. His eyes looked a deeper blue than usual. My eyes fell on his mouth and I realized how much I had missed his touch.

I wanted to jump into his arms, but there was still doubt in my heart and it was weighing the happy-go-lucky part of me down.

“Okay, so…as you might have guessed by now, you and I aren’t going anywhere,” Beverly spoke. “But you and Brandon are going on a little adventure–”

“What?” I turned to her snapping out of my Brandon-induced daydream.

“Yes! And you have to leave, like…right now. So, chop-chop!”

I looked at Brandon quizzically. “What do you have to say? Cat got your tongue?” I joked.

“I want you to come with me. I don’t want to have to persuade you. I’m also afraid I’m going to spill the beans and ruin the whole thing,” he said.

“You seem pretty good at keeping things to yourself,” I sneered.

“Alright! Easy, woman! Come on, time to go!” She came behind me and started pushing me towards Brandon’s car.

“Okay, okay!” I took my purse, locked the house and unwillingly walked to the car, all with the flowers in my arms. “Crap! I forgot about the flowers. I turned to Beverly. “You have the keys to my house, right? Would you mind putting them in a vase?”

“I’ll do it,” she replied.

“Thanks.”

“But first, there’s something else I have to do.” She exchanged a look with Brandon and I stared confused at the two of them.

She got a strip of black fabric out of her purse. What the hell was that?

“Turn around,” she commanded.

“What?”

“Turn around. I have to put this blindfold on you.”

“Seriously?” I gasped. How could these two people be those I used to think I trusted? “Am I not coming willingly?” I asked Brandon.

“This is her idea,” he replied, tilting his head in Beverly’s direction.

Of course. I should have known. Miss lover of kinky steamy romance novels.

“Well, it’s not necessary,” I argued.

“It totally is,” Beverly rebuffed. “It’s going to ruin the whole surprise. Wear the motherfucking blindfold or so help me God, Lucy.”

“Okay, okay.” Jeez. Who knew she could be such a Bossypants? “You’re making me reconsider our friendship, you know,” I told her.

“Lies,” she said, tying the knot behind my head. “All done!” she exclaimed and then pinched my butt.

“Ouch!”

“Awww, stop it, you sissy. Give me these.” She took the flowers from my arms. Brandon took my hand and just the feeling of his warm fingers around mine, made my heart jump a little. I exhaled.

“I promise you, this is going to be good,” he whispered in my ear. God, his voice sounded even sexier than I remembered.

He helped me in the car and put the seatbelt around me. His lips brushed against mine just for a second, and I gasped.

“I have to admit, I do like this blindfold,” he teased.

“Of course you do.”

“I almost forgot,” Beverly said. She took my hand and placed some lightweight object in my hand. It was shaped like a square and it was made of paper.

“What is it?”

“A CD mix. A little ‘sorry for blindfolding you, friend, have a great time on your mystery road trip’ playlist.”

“Road trip?” I asked.

“Oops, I said too much. Anyway, I’m sure you’re going to hate me a little less after you listen to it.”

“If you say so.”

“Have a fabulous night and don’t forget to tell your best friend she’s the best when you end up having a great time.”

“We’ll see about that,” I joked and smiled, but I wondered if she knew I was joking. I couldn’t see her and wasn’t sure if she was smiling.

“Bye, Lucy. I wuv you!”

“Wuv you too!”

She closed the door, and a moment later I heard Brandon’s door open and he sat in the passenger seat. He closed his door and started the car.

“Where are we going?” I asked him.

“You’ll see.”

“Well, at the moment, I can’t see anything.” He laughed. It was a warm, rich sound that eased up the nervousness and made me smile.

“I missed your smile,” he said. “I can’t believe you had the strength to stay away from me a whole week.”

“Eight days,” I corrected him.

“Were you going to keep giving me the cold shoulder if I hadn’t showed up at your door?”

“I don’t know.” I heard him exhale a deep breath and wondered if that hurt his feelings. It was easier to be indifferent to him when he wasn’t around. Now, in the small space of the car, my head swam in his scent, his words made my heartbeat speed up, and a warm and fuzzy feeling spread into my chest. The knots in my stomach dissolved and the words almost come rushing out of my mouth.

“I missed you too.”

“Good,” he said.

Becky's Kiss by Nicholas Fisher

"It could not be worse for ninth grader Becky Michigan on her first day at a new school, sitting in beet juice and staining her white jeans in a classroom about to fill up with students. In the nick of time, a gorgeous blonde boy named Danny comes in and offers his over-sized baseball jersey so she can cover up, get to the office, and change. By the time she pulls the shirt over her head, however, he has mysteriously disappeared.

Becky scours the school in search of her dream-athlete and wonders why after contact with him she has magically gained the ability to throw a fastball ninety miles per hour! Instead of finding the answer, however, Becky's new skill pits her against the school bully and the entire varsity baseball team.

That night, after her exciting showdown in front of the entire school, Danny shows up at her bedroom window. If she will agree to meet him behind Rutledge High at midnight on the ball field at the edge of the woods, he promises to reveal a secret meant to alter the past and change her life forever."

Since the story involved high school drama he decided to write his first young adult piece. When not writing or teaching, Nicholas Fisher enjoys pizza, reality television, and playing the banjo. I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. First of all, I am not used to reading books with characters this young. However, Nicholas did an excellent job portraying the mindset of the teenagers. The story was very well written and the characters seemed to mesh well. I quite enjoyed the fantasy aspect and it was a nice quick read. I hope to read more of Nicholas Fisher in the future, as his creativity shows no bounds.

Excerpts Excerpt #1 Excerpt from Becky’s Kiss. 9th grader Becky Michigan gets to health class early on her first day of high school and sits in beet juice. Something was wrong. Something was wet. She’d sat in something. “No,” she moaned, standing, arching back, straining her glance, rubbing with both hands and bringing them up before her all greasy and red. It was beet juice, she could smell it…those awful disgusting beets she had seen at lunch in the steamtable pan second to the end, floating in a greasy puddle of scarlet broth. Clearly, someone had snuck some out in an eyedropper or a monkey dish and doused the chair, ha ha, and to make matters worse she wearing white pants! What was she going to do? The clock on the wall read 1:15 p.m., and in less than a minute the halls would be packed with students, jostling, joking, pushing, and laughing. Could she make it to the office before the bell? Doubtful. And she wasn’t sure of the way. She didn’t even know if the trailers were connected to the second or third floor, and she couldn’t remember whether it was the auditorium or the shop that you had to detour around and on which side either one sat. Oh, this was a mess! Becky looked for something to wipe her hands on, and of course, there was nothing. She was holding her hands away from her body now, looking all around, seeing everything all at once and registering little, trying not to scream. There was a clicking noise. Shoes. Out in the hall and closing. Becky froze. She would move the chair to the back corner and sit! Yes! She would park herself right back in that puddle of beet juice all through health class. She wouldn’t budge until everyone had gone to their busses. If the teacher told her to get up she’d refuse, stay ‘til midnight if she had to, outlast everyone. She didn’t sit back down, however. Somehow, she just couldn’t move. The clicking had made its way right up to the doorway now, and in a scattered kind of a way, Becky tried to determine what type of person walked that way. Someone in heels, someone haughty. One of the popular girls. One of the older popular girls. Or maybe an administrator. She hoped it was the third choice, but didn’t look forward to any of the encounters. He came around the corner, a kid wearing a back-turned cap, gray baseball pants, and a long, untucked yellow t-shirt, green lettering going across in a cursive slant spelling out ‘Newtown Edgemont’ then fading off after the letters ‘Bic..’ Whatever that meant. The sound had been his cleats, and he had probably gotten out of his last class to help set up for the first fall ball practices or something. Becky stood there stunned, for he was the most beautiful boy she had ever seen in her life. Dirty-blonde hair, drawn cheeks, and eyebrows that arched in a way most girls would kill for. And his crystal blue, almond-shaped eyes had a softness to them, a kindness, a familiarity like the tree in your back yard and the tire swing hanging from it. “Are you all right?” he said. He was looking at her hands. She shook her head slightly. No, you’re warm, keep guessing. He put his knuckles up, pointed down a finger, and twirled it slowly, like ‘turn around.’ She did it and then turned back. If he was laughing, she would simply shrivel up and curl like a cinder. “Gosh,” he said evenly. “They got you with a diaper rash something good.” He took the towel that had been slung around his neck and tossed it to her. “Go ahead. Pat it and blot it out best you can.” He looked at the clock. “And I think you’d better hurry.” Becky widened her eyes and tilted her head expectantly. Now her hand was up, knuckles high and index finger twirling so he’d turn and give her a second. She couldn’t believe that she’d suddenly gained the confidence to be cutsie, especially with the hour glass nearly depleted so to speak, but she had and he politely looked off behind him. She blotted. Wiped her hands off. Threw the towel in the trash. “What now?” she said. He looked back, and if there was even the hint of a smile in his eyes, Becky knew that this weird, delicate moment would shatter. He certainly didn’t smile. He took off his shirt and gave it to her. “I get them extra big and long whenever we win a tournament,” he said. “Go ahead, put it on. It’ll get you to the nurse at least, and if you soaked up the extra back there real good it shouldn’t cauliflower through.” Becky Michigan didn’t waste any more time wondering if this boy was going to smirk at her. She slipped her head through the collar, thinking about the way the inside of his shirt smelled faintly of Old Spice, same as her Dad used, and she was thinking about the way the fragrance brought up images of porch swings and prayers and sunsets and goodness, all of it welling up inside her like some sweet longing that made worries like pants-stains drift to the edges like corner shadows. She pushed through her elbows and pulled through her chin, eyes closed, daring herself to next let her gaze drift down from his glance a bit so she could really take a look at that muscular little ‘V’ he had going on. “Well, how do I…?” Her voice died on the air, and her mouth closed. Slowly, she straightened and smoothed down her new tournament shirt, then gathered her hair, pulled it through, and let it fall down across her shoulders. Her problems were solved. Now she could go to the nurse without anyone bothering to glance at her. Her real issues had only just begun. Gone were the images of sunsets and porches. And the boy of her dreams had vanished.

Excerpt
“I hope you’re nice and relaxed, Emily. Because we need to have a chat.”
Apprehension fluttered in my belly. Chatting was definitely not the direction I wanted to go in from here. Whatever he had to say, I couldn’t possibly listen. I was too agitated.
But without him spelling it out, I knew that was the terms of this arrangement. He’d touch me—in his way. And I’d listen, whether I wanted to or not.
So I propped myself up again and gave him as much of my attention as I could.
“It’s interesting,” he said, his thumbs doing that amazing thing on the bottom of my foot, “how people respond to you when they believe you’ve gotten away with murder.”
My stomach dropped. No speech that started with murder had a happy ending.
“Most people are frightened of you,” he said as his hand stroked up my shin. “They pull their business. They stop attending your events. They certainly won’t let themselves be seen with you. It’s not really anything to fret over, losing those connections. You don’t want cowards in your court. Good riddance to them.”
“I’m not a coward,” I managed to say defensively. Though I wasn’t sure why I was defending myself. Or why I was anxious that he might mean good riddance to me when that was probably exactly what I should be wishing he meant.
He glanced up at me, amusement in his features. “No, you’re not. You’re not scared. Or you’re not scared enough.”
I barely fought the shiver that begged to stutter through my body. It was a menacing statement, and I wanted to deny it as well. Tell him that I was definitely scared enough. But what the hell did that mean, anyway? Considering how turned on I was despite everything I’d learned about him, still turned on despite the foreboding in his tone, well, maybe he had a point. I really wasn’t scared enough.
The amusement transformed to what looked more like awe. Then his attention fell back to my leg and I couldn’t see his face well enough to read him. But after he pushed my ankle back so that my knee bent, his touch changed. A single finger traced the line of my inner thigh. Softly. Sweetly. Just as he got to where I so wanted him to go, he abruptly stopped. One second passed. Two.
Then he resumed the firm pressure from before, reclaiming his restraint. For now.
I could wait.
His speech continued, his voice firm, icy. “There are other people, too. Those that respect you. They aren’t necessarily your friends, because they’re also scared—probably even more so than those who keep their distance. They continue their financial support of your endeavors. They invite you to their parties. Their children’s weddings. They look out for you. Because, you see, they’re afraid that if they don’t…well.”
My heart hammered in my ears. Suddenly I was feeling vulnerable in a way that had nothing to do with my nudity and all to do with the frailty of my size compared to the strength of his.
As if to prove that point, Reeve increased the pressure of his kneading, digging his fingers into the flesh of my thigh with a bite that sang and stung. “It’s a very intense form of power, actually. Much like having money. I’m sure you’ve gotten a taste of that with the recent success of your show. Imagine that but multiplied by a billion.”
“Mm hmm,” I said, a response that served as an answer though it was mostly an involuntary reaction to his hands. He’d reached the top of my limb again. Like before, the tips of his fingers brushed against my folds.
Goddammit, I was wet. And trembling. And overwrought with anticipation. This time, would he let his touch wander farther up? In?
His hands left me. He pushed my leg down, pulled the sheet back over my leg and pinned me with narrowed eyes. “It’s also not unlike the power of being a very attractive person. Another privilege that you understand.” He scanned the length of my body, the sheet still a barrier between us, and let out an audible breath. “I imagine you must understand it very well indeed.”
It was an accusation. The grit in his voice and the weight of his stare said so. Fucker. Whatever hopes I’d had for this whole scene of his, it was clear now that his intent was not friendly. Punishing, more like. I still wasn’t sure for what exactly. For being in his pool. For using my beauty to draw his interest. For coming onto him without his permission. I’d thought his humiliating body search had been all the reprimand I was getting. Guess I’d been wrong.
My eyes fell. However, a glance at his crotch gave me the slightest smidgeon of satisfaction. He was unmistakably hard. He might be punishing me, but he was punishing himself too.
